Watch Out For Bikers
1967-ish; I must have been about ten or eleven, looking over the fence in our garden in the small english market town of Newton Abbot in Devon. A Royal Enfield motorcycle was being cleaned by its owner and I was watching with a bored expression, just waiting for the guy with the quiff in his leather jacket to start it and make that wonderful angry sound that barks at the world as only a big single can. He tucked the rag under the bikes seat then threw his leg over it rolling it off the…

This is a short story for my Dad...
Lighting flashes across the darkening New Mexico sky as Old Man Johnson looks out the antique pane window. He chews several times at the hunk of tobacco lodged in his jaw and spits to his left, hitting the rusted spittoon jus on the inside rim.
"Guess that's less time you'll have-a cleanin' my floor sexy," he says snickering as he walks toward the bar. He eyes the girl bent over as she moves beer around in the beer cooler and wipes…

Last year I was filming some scenes for a movie for ESPN. I was outside at a baseball stadium for three straight days, 12 hours a day. It was 100 to 106 degrees every day and we were in the sun for most of the shots (between shots I would go to the dugout for some shade but I swear it felt hotter in the dugout).
I did ride to the shoot (I live 250 miles away) and it was a great ride up. Coming home was a different story. I was wrapped on a Sunday about 1:00, it was already 102 out and…

HOT DAMN! I made it back to IA ! Believe me when I tell you I was concerned too. Improvise, adapt and overcome! After I figured out how to cram all my crap in the car and open trunk, my next stop was to find someone to look at the tie downs to make sure they looked ok. A nice fella at Tractor Suppy, a fellow rider, said they looked good. So, off I go. All the while checking the rear view and looking for cops. When I get to Homer NE it's time to check the straps. They had loosened a bit and…

I probaly do this ride two or three times a week its about 80 miles roundtrip which is really nothing when your laid off for the summers, what else are you gonna do right? anyways the elevation is only a few thousand feet but some of the turns are really tight and some are long bending loop type…

hi, It's me again. the hardware didn't work, wouldn't work, I tried to tell them this. maybe one day if I grow a set and get all hairy I can be listened to. Now I'm not saying the arrangement I have now will get me 400 miles. you see when we got the front wheel into the trunk we had to turn the wheel, this would not have been the case if the bumper had been cut down as per my direction. So, she is now suspended and my bumber is holding the tension off the forks and triple tree.…

I remember jumpin some trash cans on my bicycle. Instead of laying them down, we stood them up. My back tire landed directly in the last trash can (nothing but net). My bike and I looked like a fight between the Coyote and the Tazmanian Devil until the chain link fence stopped us.....:-) So, like the brilliant youngster I was, I untangled myself from my bike and the fence, put my chain back on, straightened the handlebars and tried it again. This time I layed the trash cans down…

my idea was to take the trunk lid off and start cutting the trunk up. My bike was going to get home no matter what I had to do to get her there. So my concerned friends came up with a better solution. Angle iron and big bolts. I will take the front tire off and run this rod thru the forks in its place then mount the bike on the hardware which is bolted to the space where my licence plate was. It's too early on sunday morning for my help to arrive so I will let you know later how the new idea…

This isn't strictly a 'motorcycle' story but at least THE COPS were on motorcycles, and we all were on two wheels, anyway.
Anyway, back in the early 1980’s, I was in college in the San Fernando Valley in California and my main mode of transportation was my 18-speed bicycle, which I rode like mad everywhere.
One evening, I was riding south on Reseda Blvd. It was downhill, so I was going at a pretty good clip. A couple of motorcycle cops were sitting on their Harleys on a side…

Last weekend I spied something at the pawn shop that tickled my fancy. (Note: Keep in mind that my "fancy" is easily tickled.) I bought something really cool for my wife. The occasion was our 30th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my sweet girl. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized Taser gun with a clip.
For those of you who are not familiar with this product, it is a less-than-lethal stun gun with two metal prongs designed to…

The name refers to a group of MDA campers that I wrote about in a book of the same name. Each year in the summer, a group of riders gather... half are on two wheels, half on three. And we ride to local MDA camps to give the kids rides in the sidecars. It is so much fun, I wrote a book about it and had it published last summer. My goal is to get The Sidecar Kings into every middle school classroom in the US. It's available at Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble .com and directly through this…
