Can someone help me understand why Donny says that the heat in the 110" is due to the Compression Ration of only 9.3:1, and should be at least 10:1.
This is the full quote from this month on page 44.  He also says an oil cooler would help.   Doesn't he know the RK and ULtra's have them?

The CVO 110"
HD IS CURRENTLY HAVING BIG pronlems keeping the cVO 110" from overheating.  The rear head gasket is blowing out, away from the oil return hole located between the cylinder and head.  This is occurring after as little as 2000 miles of use.  It is my belief that Harley had issues during the development of the CVO 110because the engine's compression ratio is low: a paltry 9.3:1.  The stock TC 96 Twin Cam has a respectable compression ratio of 9.2:1, which is okay for a stock model.  The TC 96 increases it's ratio by .4 points, up from the TC 88's ratio of 8.8:1.  In a perfect world, the 110" engine needs a minimum ratio of 10:1 and preferably 10.5:1.  Reduced compression ratios lower cylinder head temperatures and the probability of detonation.  The addition of an oil cooler would assist in lowering the cylinder head temperatures, as well as control the devastating effects of ongoing detonation."

Does he mean the design was to have higher ratios but there was even more heat so they lowered the ratio?  From what I learned here, the 255 cam causes some of these issues.

I dunno.....but I double checked the specs, cuz I just bought a 2010 Limited and she's got the 103. I thought my comp ratio was higher.....and it is at 9.7:1. Man is she feisty too. Glad I did her and not the CVO now. I just don't know, never did understand the thinking of engineers as an auto tech.

THE HARLEYS FROM THEJ FACTORY RUN LEAN. THEY ALWAYS HAVE TO PASS EXHAUST EMMISIONS TEST. YOU HAVE TO PUT A DIGITAL FUEL OPTIMIZER ON THEM TO HAVE A RICHER FUEL MIXTURE. THAT IS WHAT IS MAKING A STOCK HARLEY RUN HOT. HARLEY MAKES A FUEL TUNER THAT TAKES CARE OF THIS PROBLEM. ALSO AFTERMARKET DFO  IS A POWER COMMANDER AND TUNERS OF THAT SORT. BET THE HEAT IS CAUSED BY A MOTOR RUNNING WITH NOT ENOUGH FUEL RUNNING THROUGH IT OR IN OTHER WORDS RUNNING LEAN....COMP. DOESN'T DO IT, THE FUEL MIXTURE CAUSES HEAT. BUT GET READY TO SPEND SOME MONEY CAUSE THEY ARE NOT CHEAP, NOT THE GOOD ONES.  YOU ARE LOOKING AT A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS.
MY ULTRA HAS A 103 CI. AND IT HAS A COMP; RATIO OF 10.2 TO 1 AND THATS AS HIGH AS YOU WANT TO GO BECAUSE YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH GETTING A PING IN THE ENGINE BECAUSE OF THE GAS WE HAVE NOW DAYS. THE HIGHER THE COMP. THE MORE YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET A PING IN THE MOTOR AND THATS NOT GOOD FOR THEM.
ok I have an 07 ultra, with 10.5 to 1 pistons, 255 cams billit cam plate gives better support for the cams. (twice as many needle bearings). python headers with torque cones, removed the nose cones off the mufflers and used a drumel and removed the baffels. It started as a 103, however, last year my oil pressure started falling at red lights. Had the local h-d dealer check it and said it was ok. After the motor blew up because the main crank bearings went out. H-D rep. in WI. said it was common from 2003-2009. last dino has it at 106, was thinking about the 110ci, but they advised me not to. the 110 put out 89 hp. with the 103 you can put larger valves and 350 cam and have over 100 hp.   I installed the true duals this spring,  thwe bike runs stronger and cooler. found the stock headers have dents on the back side for clearance.  Harley had to pay for the repairs, they put 2002 main crank bearings. I bought my wife a 2010 triglide last year and asked if the same thing would happen to it. They told me no that they changed the angle of the crank bearings.  they also have been having problems with the cam chains. creating a noise that sounds like lifter issues.  I hope that this helps some of you.  Have a great riding year.
2008-cvo-ultra. have rine hart true duals, breather kit, power comander, the 110 still runs hot,iam going to replace cams, rear head gasket went 8000ks,.cheers.
