Watch Out For Bikers
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the driver who is accused of rear-ending a couple on a motorcycle, killing one, on Friday night near Coconut Point mall.
Stephen Alexander Brown, 40, of the 18000 block of Verona Lago Drive in Miromar Lakes, was charged with careless driving and driving a vehicle in an unsafe condition or with defective equipment.
Both charges are civil infractions, meaning Brown will have a mandatory court appearance where a judge could decide his punishment. That could be anything from a possibility of points on his license to losing it entirely, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Schall said.
According to the crash report:
Brown was driving a two-door red 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix north on U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs, behind the motorcycle driven by Doug McGill, 50, of Fort Myers. Janine Becker, 57, of Bonita Springs, was a passenger on the 1979 black Yamaha motorcycle.
Brown arrived at a traffic light at the intersection with Vandenberg Way, where the motorcycle was stopped, as the light turned from red to green, reports said. Rather than coming to a complete stop, reports say Brown accelerated and rear-ended the motorcycle. Both McGill and Becker were thrown from the motorcycle.
McGill was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and was soon released. Becker was pronounced dead at Gulf Coast Hospital.

So, did this clown EVER see the motorcycle that was stopped at a traffic light? Or, was he too busy with his cell phone call and just stomped the gas as soon as he was aware of a green light ahead? Is THAT what they meant by careless driving?
What was the unsafe condition? His lead foot on the accelerator?
Just today, I saw an 18-wheeler run a red light on a cross street. AND, there was a pickup truck with a trailer that came thru the red light AFTER the truck. That's why I don't ever just jump on the gas when I get a green light. There are too many people trying to beat the light and would run me over in a heartbeat.
Permalink Reply by Ava on September 1, 2011 at 1:08am It sounds like he was just an Idiot and in a big hurry not caring if any one got her. Hopefully he goes to jail for it. Back in 99 my oldest brother was killed by a kid in a pickup truck.my brother was stopped on his motorcycle in traffic and a 18 year old kid was paying more attention to his friends on the other side of the road and hanging out his window. The kid got nothing other than a slap on the hand.

Permalink Reply by Tess320 on September 2, 2011 at 1:20am Two years and five months ago, my man was on our Fat Boy when he was rear-ended by an International 4300. There were no skid marks. The truck simply rear-ended him. The witness was a CHP motorcycle officer. Hmmmmmmm........ I wonder what caught the trucker's eye that caused him to look down right before he rear-ended my man? It's my understanding that the trucker is "fine" and OBViousLY working somewhere ELSE. As for my man...... he's never been able to return to work and we struggle daily with his traumatic brain injury, as well as the orthopedic injuries he sustained. HOW COULD YOU NOT HAVE SEEN HIM!?!? Not only did he have the right to be where he was......he was wearing his helmet and full leathers.........the Fat Boy was a bike that "turned heads" no matter where it was. WATCH OUT FOR BIKERS! I pray you (the truck driver......... I won't use your name) and your family are getting along well. God bless.

Whilst I accept that he is not responsible for the injustices of the US court system, for handing down ludicrously soft penalties (if they can be called that) for this type of crime, he is responsible for the crime itself.
Hopefully he'll be receiving a "visit" in the near future.
Permalink Reply by Rip on September 2, 2011 at 12:00pm The argument 'I didn't see the bike.' does not now nor has it ever held water. As the operator of a motor vehicle, you are responsible for knowing what is around you and driving appropriately whether you are on a bike, in a car or driving an M4 Sherman tank. If you hit a bike from any direction and the biker or passenger is killed, you should be executed. No exceptions. Fry a couple of dozen of these cell phone using bozos and we may see a change. The simple fact is that as long as we treat the criminal better than we treat the victim, this problem will not go away.
