Hello all, I have been wanting to vacation in the Florida Keys since I was a kid. Never happened. So this year, I am trying my best to finally get there. I have looked around at some of the vacation rentals and most of them are spectacular, but very pricey. I don't need a pool, hello...I'm on an ISLAND. I'll go in the ocean if I want to swim. I just need a place to sleep, shower and maybe make some dinners. Nothing special..but clean.

I have thought about trailering the bikes to the furthest I can on the Florida mainland, it seems rates are much cheaper there, and then ride the bikes through the Keys. That alone would be a great ride!

Since I have never been to the Keys, I was hoping that someone on here would lend their experience and opinion so I can make a better descision. Thanks in advance for the assistance, I look forward to reading what y'all say. Peace!

From my vacations in Florida a pool is recommended.  Salt water is nasty to swim in and it dries your skin out really bad..

Try looking at north keys areas. I stayed at the lookout lodge, mile marker 88. I went with a boat, and they have a slip and parking for the trailer behind the rooms. There is a camp ground too.  Or like you said, room north and ride it to the end.

I have lived in Florida for 27 years...and still have not done the Keys.. But got some friends that have been there ..done that...and the hit the camp grounds and rough it when they go.. There is a poker run that is held every year down there that is a pretty big deal..not sure of the dates on that..Tall Pines...is where they stay and ride from there..Hope it helps..Ride Safe !!  Ride Smart !!

If you can swing it stay in the Keys if you can, especially if you want to see as much as you can from the back of a bike.  It is a long way from anyplace you would want to stay on the mainland to Key West.  Marathon would be your best bet.  Options on rooms there aren't too bad.  Remember you basically only have 1 road to ride on down there, traffic isn't too bad, rarely is the speed limit over 45 there area few back roads you can take here and there, but riding is limited.

Laura has a riding story about Key West, also she has some links that might be useful. Tourist season runs from Nov. through April. traffic easily doubles and prices are generally higher.
The Big run that instagator is talking about is the Phil Peterson Key West Poker Run, I believe it will be held Sept 13 2012, this year. September is off season better prices but you still need to book early, see if you reserve a camp site, many times their filled up, also it's hotter than Hell in Sept.

Thanks y'all for the good info. I like the camping idea... and I will also start looking in the northern keys for places. That Poker run sounds like a lot of fun... I'll have to see about getting some more info on that.

Thanks again! Keep the rubber side down! =o)

Here are some photos for the Peterson Run

Watch out for Gators.

We ride down to Marathon,FL. and stay there, your close to Key West and things are a bit cheaper...
Interesting that I came across this forum, but I am also interested in riding to Florida Keys. Last summer I did Milwaukee, WI to New Orleans, LA. This summer I am thinking Milwaukee to the Keys. Please keep me posted as I am also unfamiliar with Florida.
P.S. I am able to make the trip anytime between June 16th- August 20th (as I am a teacher and will be off for summer vacation).

Just a quick 2 cents...the beaching/swimming is more limited than I thought. Yes there is some camping but if you say trailer to Key Largo and then momo down...suweeeeeet ride. Eat fish sandwiches, conch chowder on your way down...delicious!
