It's a controversy that has been debated in state legislatures across the country. Should motorcycle riders be forced to wear helmets?

The following states require all motorcycle riders to wear helmets, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Alabama, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The National Traffic Safety Board now wants to make a helmet law universal across the country. Helmets were added to its "most wanted list" in November to increase motorcycle safety after the number of motorcycle crashes doubled between 1997 and 1998. The board is asking all states to create "helmets required" laws for all riders.

Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire are the three states that don't have any laws pertaining to motorcyclists wearing helmets - all the other states not listed have laws restricting either younger drivers or passengers to wear helmets as part of the motorcycle riding gear requirements.

In a study conducted of 900 motorcycle crashes in the Los Angeles area, the most deadly injuries to the accident victims were found to be injuries to the chest and head.

If you're heading out on a bike this summer, make sure you check the laws in your state to determine if a helmet is needed. And if you plan on crossing state lines, make sure you review the other state's laws, because they may be different than what you are used to.

In addition to wearing a helmet, consider spending money on leather motorcycle jackets, non-slip gloves, leather pants and sturdy ankle-high boots for extra security. These extra layers can help protect you if you were to get into a crash on your bike.

Riding a motorcycle opens you up to intimately experiencing the open road. And practicing good motorcycle safety while enjoying the scenery can help protect you in case something were to happen while you're on the back of a bike.

Sure, push for forcing bikers to wear helmets but do nothing about the use of cell phones and texting by the drivers of cages. That makes great sense....

Lots of states ARE enacting laws that restrict cell phone use and many have already banned texting.
Distracted driving is worst then driving drunk......

Let those who ride decide, period.
i live in delaware we dont have to wear helmet if we dont want to and now a new law is proposed is not to have one on the bike over the age of 19. My question is if that bill passes then Im percieving it has my life has no value on a motorcycle but in my car I have to buckle up and not use my cell phone. Well that doesnt make sense whats so ever. My thing is my head, my body, my choice Car or motorcycle
If those who ride want to decide, then those who ride should have to pay the increased healthcare costs of not wearing a helmet. You don't get privileges without accountability. I wear my helmet, jacket, gloves and leather shoes every time I leave the driveway.
I usually asked this when responding to they care about our health and safety. " If our government cares so much about our health and safety why have they not outlawed the # 1 killer in the world ? ..................When they ask what that is tell them.... Smoking. Usually shuts them right up..... Its all about money.
The tax payers pay more to defer the cost of health care of smokers then anything other medial expense, except for maybe illegals, so why don't they. The taxes they collect off of the Tobacco Co. and I'm sure there is a lot of kick backs there.......
Yup, the obvious again, Helmets save ya, so maybe if the Caged drivers payed more attention to the road and everyone else that SHARES it, there would be less motorcycle accidents PERIOD!!!!! I am pretty sure there NOT all our fault!!!!
Yup exactly said!!!!!

Yeah but are the enforcing it? its easier to see a Biker with out a helmet on then some caged driver texting unless us bikers pull up along side them and see it then Yell at them.

If you can wear helmet, gloves, jacket, leathers when it's 100 degrees out, you're either tough or stupid.
